Part of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, Cancun is rich in cultural influence and ripe with tropical nature. Before Cancun became a tourist town and before the Spanish occupation, the Yucatan Peninsula was inhabited and dominated by Mayan civilizations until most of the local sites were abandoned by the15th century.

The official language spoken in Cancun is Spanish. Most of the Mexicans working in the tourism industry speak English. Many of the local indigenous people still speak Mayan as their first language and Spanish as their second, you will often hear them speaking Mayan amongst themselves.
The Peso is the national currency although U.S. dollars are widely accepted in most businesses throughout Cancun. Major credit cards are also accepted in most establishments. Banks offer currency exchange during business hours.

June is the hottest month in Cancun with an average temperature of 28°C (82°F) and the coldest is January at 23°C (73°F) with the most daily sunshine hours at 11 in August. The wettest month is September with an average of 270mm of rain. The best month to swim in the sea is in July when the average sea temperature is 29°C (84°F).
