About this Destination
Nassau is the capital of the Bahamas. It lies on the island of New Providence, with neighbouring Paradise Island accessible via Nassau Harbour bridges. A popular cruise-ship stop, the city has a hilly landscape and is known for beaches as well as its offshore coral reefs, popular for diving and snorkelling. It retains many of its typical pastel-coloured British colonial buildings, like the pink-hued Government House.
The Bahamas has a distinct culture which has evolved over generations, from a mixture of mostly African, combined with some British and American influences, which developed into a unique and colourful style of Bahamian self-expression. Bahamians are best described as easy-going, friendly and hospitable.
English is the official language of the Bahamas and is spoken by a majority of the population. Also popular languages are Bahamian English and Haitian Creole. Haitian Creole is common among the Haitian population.
The legal tender is the Bahamian dollar, which is equivalent in value to the U.S. dollar. U.S. currency is accepted throughout Nassau Paradise Island, as are most major credit cards and traveler's checks.
Weather and Climate
The climate is tempered by the cooling trade winds and is cooler than other Caribbean islands due to their location. The average temperature in the Bahamas range from 80 to 85°F / 27 to 32°C in the summer and 70 to 78°F / 21 to 27°C in winter.
